Ever experienced frustration at the lack of focus in your photographs? Or perhaps at missing that perfect photographic moment because of a shutter delay? Well, the revolutionary new cameras by Lytro work like magic and take care of all your photographic sharpness and delay Woes.

The pictures clicked by these new cameras are captured instantly without the tiniest bit of delay and the best thing is that you can focus and re-focus at any point of the photograph after clicking the picture.

Not only do the lytro cameras look completely different from your regular cameras, they are also based on a completely different technology – the light field technology, which as the name suggests, records the entire field of light while clicking a photograph.

According to Lytro.com, ”… light field is a core concept in imaging science, representing fundamentally more powerful data than in regular photographs. The light field fully defines how a scene appears. It is the amount of light traveling in every direction through every point in space. Conventional cameras cannot record the light field.

Recording light fields requires an innovative, entirely new kind of sensor called a light field sensor. The light field sensor captures the color, intensity and vector direction of the rays of light. This directional information is completely lost with traditional camera sensors, which simply add up all the light rays and record them as a single amount of light.

The website also goes on to explain that, “…by substituting powerful software for many of the internal parts of regular cameras, light field processing introduces new capabilities that were never before possible. Sophisticated algorithms use the full light field to unleash new ways to make and view pictures.

Relying on software rather than components can improve performance, from increased speed of picture taking to the potential for capturing better pictures in low light. It also creates new opportunities to innovate on camera lenses, controls and design”.

Another aspect of this technology is that the huge amount of data that is collected by the camera for each picture could potentially be used for creating 3D photographs or also  for viewing the pictures from different perceptions or angles.

The cameras themselves are designed to look cool and  minimilastic with a small touch screen and a single, almost invisible  button for clicking. The pictures taken can be viewed and focused instantly on the camera screen thanks to the  built in software. Otherwise, the pictures can be imported to a computer that already has the lytro software installed for further manipulation.

The Cameras are priced ranging from $399 onwards  and are expected to be shipped by early 2012.

The video below by Smartplanet.com offers more details related to this technology and includes an interview with Ren Ng, founder of Lytro.
